You’ve heard of antioxidants and how good they are for you. Okay, good to know. But what do they actually do? Antioxidants in your blood help your body to be better prepared to fight off disease. During the metabolism process excess free radicals may hang around causing oxidative stress, which can lead to cardiovascular disease, cancer or chronic diseases, but antioxidants can help delay or prevent this. It turns out that strawberries may be one of the best ways to get these disease-fighting antioxidants.
According to a small study published in Food Chemistry, strawberries may be one of the best antioxidant-rich fruits. To prove their theory, researchers gave 12 volunteers a little over a pound of Sveva strawberries to eat every day for 16 days. Researchers found that there was an increased level of antioxidants in each participant’s blood.
High amounts of antioxidants in the blood can protect red blood cells from oxidative stress, preventing cell injury and conditions like heart disease. Even better, those levels were sustained for one month after the study.
Over a pound of strawberries every day may seem a bit far out and well, it is. While strawberries are the most commonly eaten berry whether fresh or processed, it takes a whole bowl to get just 5 ounces of the red berry. But even if you can’t stomach that much, it may be worth adding a few more disease-busting strawberries to your daily diet.
Not a fan of strawberries? Antioxidants can be found in plenty of fruits; especially other types of berries. On your next trip to the grocery store pick up blackberries, raspberries or cranberries. If that doesn’t sound good, try snacking on pineapple, oranges, walnuts, prunes or pecans, which are also good source of antioxidants.
